Scott Petri, 57, of Valencia, has been identified as the individual who died in a tragic incident late Friday night after jumping from a bridge onto the 5 Freeway. The confirmation came from Kelly Vail, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m., when motorists and bystanders reported seeing a man standing on the edge of the Weldon Canyon Road overpass, overlooking the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway. According to Carlos Burgos-Lopez, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall Area Office, the man appeared distressed before leaping from the bridge.
First responders rushed to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls. Upon arrival, CHP officers discovered that the man—later identified as Petri—had been struck by at least one vehicle after landing on the freeway. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Petri’s vehicle was found parked nearby along The Old Road, in close proximity to the Weldon Canyon overpass. The discovery suggests he had walked from his car to the bridge before the fatal jump. At this time, authorities have not confirmed whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the incident. Toxicology results are pending as part of the coroner’s ongoing investigation.
The tragedy prompted a heartfelt statement from Captain E. A. Krusey of the CHP, who acknowledged the emotional weight such incidents place on all involved. “Every life lost to suicide is a heartbreaking reminder of the silent battles many face,” Krusey said. “As peace officers, we often witness the pain left behind. We urge anyone struggling to reach out – there is help, and there is hope. No one has to face this alone.”
The freeway was temporarily closed during the investigation, creating traffic delays in the area as officers worked to clear the scene and collect evidence. The CHP has asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
Scott Petri’s death has sent shockwaves through the Valencia community, where he was known as a quiet and kind neighbor. Friends and acquaintances expressed sadness at the news, with some noting the importance of mental health awareness and support.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the invisible struggles that many individuals endure. Community members are encouraged to look out for one another and to seek help if they or someone they know is experiencing emotional distress.
