Father Stan STFX Death : Stanley MacDonald Smithton IL Obituary : Father Stan MacDonald Passed Away – St. Francis Xavier University Icon Father Stan Dies

Reverend Stanley MacDonald, affectionately known as Father Stan, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy steeped in love, compassion, humility, and boundless spirit. A cherished figure in the St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) community, Father Stan’s journey with the university began in the early 1950s when he arrived as a young student. Even then, his warmth and charisma stood out. As president of his freshman class, a varsity athlete in both hockey and rugby, and an active member of the Amateur Athletic Association, he quickly made his mark. In the 1954 yearbook, his classmates described him as having a “winning personality” and someone who “makes friends easily and lastingly.”

After graduating from StFX, Father Stan pursued his calling to the priesthood, studying at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax and being ordained for the Diocese of Antigonish. He served faithfully for decades as a pastor across various parishes before officially retiring in 2008. Retirement, however, was merely a new beginning for his journey with StFX, as he took up residence at Mockler Hall and immersed himself once more in the vibrant life of the university community.

Father Stan’s contributions to StFX were recognized in September 2024 when he was inducted into the university’s Sports Hall of Fame in the builder’s category. His unwavering support for student-athletes, particularly in championing women’s sports, left an indelible mark on the community. He believed in the importance of positive energy and was a constant presence at games, often high-fiving players and cheering them on. His dedication to fostering inclusivity and equality resonated deeply with students and faculty alike.

Beyond the athletic fields, Father Stan was a beacon of support and allyship for marginalized communities on campus. His actions demonstrated a commitment to justice and compassion, inspiring others to stand in solidarity. As noted by members of the X-Pride Society, his support during challenging times provided comfort and encouragement, reinforcing the values of kindness and inclusivity that he embodied throughout his life.

Father Stan’s passing is a profound loss for the StFX community and all who knew him. His legacy of unwavering support, infectious enthusiasm, and compassionate leadership will continue to inspire generations to come.
